HOSTING DEFs

Some Hosting Terms...

Package Code or Plan Code

A web Hosting Package is a Web Content Management System consisting all the features and your website requirements needed to make your website running such that you do not have to worry about the more technical aspects of running your website.
For example, a package can have 20 emails (interfaced with resourceful email client like RoundCube), Database (interfaced with database client like PHPMyAdmin).
Package code identifies a package set.

Disk Space (or Web Hosting Space)

A Disk Space is the amount of storage space on the Server's Hard Disk Drive (HDD).
It is where your website folders, files, and all other data reside.
Disk Space is measured in BYTES and in large numbers of the same. For example, a disk space of 200 bytes will have lesser storage capacity than disk space of 1000 bytes (i.e. 1 kilobyte (1KB)).
  • 1000 bytes = 1 Kilobyte (1KB)
  • 1000 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (1MB)
  • 1000 megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (1GB)
  • 1000 gigabytes = 1 Terabyte (1TB)

Bandwidth / Data Transfer

Whenever you are accessing a website, some sort of data are exchanged between your computer and the server where the website files are residing. The data exchange phenomenon is entangled in Bandwidth and Data Transfer.
Bandwidth and Data Transfer are sort of similar but are somehow different in that:
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred at one time; whereas
Data transfer is the actual amount of data transferred.

If bandwidth were a water pipe; the bigger the water pipe, the more volume of water can pass through it.

How it affects your website

The less bandwidth you have, the slower it takes your website to load, regardless of your visitor's connection type. Visitors will have to wait their turn. The less data transfer you have, the more often you will find your website unavailable because you have reached the maximum amount of data allowed to be transferred.

Domains

Computers are identified by their IP addresses. Unfortunately, humans can easy forget IP addresses because of the nature of the IP address format. For example, an IP address is like this; 41.234.21.167
There is therefore need to create a format that is understable to humans easily. This format is the Domain Name.
Thus, every computer now requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.
A domain name therefore identifies your website on the internet. For example, a domain name like "www.google.com" belongs to a company called Google Inc.

Sub Domains

A subdomain to a domain is synonymous with a subfolder of a folder on your computer.
If a domain name is "www.yahoo.com", then Yahoo can have a subdomain of "business.yahoo.com"; where www is now replaced with business.
In most cases, subdomain is used to create a specific interest of an organization's job functions.
